Wavves: Noise Punk for the Beach

2 Apr

I’ve been meaning to do this post for ages, seeing that most times I hear a song I really enjoy, it ends up being Wavves. Hailing from good ol’ San Diego, California, Wavves is a small little three-piece band that formed back in 2008. With a lo-fi sound and a whole lot of energy, these guys seem like they’re trying to meld surf rock and punk, with a heavy dose of catchiness as well. Thus far, Wavves has released three full length records in just four years, as well as an EP that came out this last September. Keep your eyes out for new music and hopefully a tour as well (I mean, they’ll be in Australia in May, so if any of you cats live “down unda” then you’re in luck). And let’s be honest, who doesn’t wanna meet Dave Grohl? You’re right: No one.

Luc & the Lovingtons: Send My Love

15 Nov

Lead by frontman Luc Reynaud, Luc & the Lovingtons have just released their second full-length record, Send My Love, on 11/11/11. Formed in Seattle over 5 years ago, Luc & the Lovingtons have been welcomed into the local, and national music scene with open arms. Their melodic, light, uplifting sound caught the ear of Jason Mraz a few years back, with the song “Freedom Song” (you can youtube it and find Jason Mraz playing the song in front of tens of thousands of people… It’s pretty great), and the Lovingtons’ ended up touring with Mraz on multiple occasions… Hopefully we can expect even more!

With regard to the new record, it is nothing short of the beauty that was expected. The catchy and feel-good vibe that the band members posses vibrantly shines through in their music. A wide variety of genres are touched upon throughout the 16 track release, from reggae, to hip-hop, to acoustic… plus a great deal of percussion… go ahead and call it some feel-good world music. Below are three tracks from the record, just enough to get you so in love that you will go ahead and buy the album! Keep your eyes out for Luc & the Lovingtons, they are coming fast and will playing a show near you sometime in the future!

Trevor Hall: Everything, Everytime, Everywhere

3 Sep

Trevor Hall has released his latest album, an 11 song effort titled Everything, Everytime, Everywhere. This is the fourth album for the young 24 year-old from Hilton Head, South Carolina. In an interview, Hall said that he was dealing with many family, and spiritual issues throughout the process of writing this album. It took a long time for the record to take shape and become the final project that it is now. As I listen to the record, both the lyrics and the instrumentation hint at these aforementioned life circumstances that Hall was dealing with. From loud and up-tempo songs, to the slower, more contemplative songs (such as the song below, “All I Ever Know”), this album paints the picture of one artist’s trials and tribulations.

Putabirdonitmusic at Vans Warped Tour!

15 Aug

Shifting between heavily studded and tattooed crowds, seven separate stages and some fifty-so booths to meet band members and attain exclusive merchandise all while basking in a bright Gorge sun is no new feeling to Washington’s regular attendees of the Vans Warped Tour. The annual national-touring festival, known for its mix of metal, punk and alternative bands both highly acclaimed and up-and-coming, brought out a heavy draw this past Saturday. This year the writers of Put a Bird on It got the exclusive privilege to navigate through throngs of teenyboppers with hair every color of the spectrum to go backstage and interview bands, take press photos and overall experience Warped Tour like few have been able to do, all of which we will be able to cover in the next couple of posts.

While we were pleased to be able to meet with members of August Burns Red, Moving Mountains, D.R.U.G.S. and The Narrative and will be posting their audio/text interviews a little later, we thought we’d take a second to show you a bit more of what Warped Tour had to offer.

All good things come to an end, and that’s something ex-Taking Back Sunday guitarist Fred takes in stride. His new supergroup, Terrible Things, has him joining ex-members of Hot Rod Circuit and Coheed and Cambria to play gritty unabashed rock. We encountered Fred backstage in the press area earlier in the day and are delighted to say that he may just be one of the nicest guys on Warped Tour.

Ever wondered what the back of the Gorge looks like?

“All these guys out here make fun of Justin Bieber, and yet they all have his fucking haircut! So what we’re doing is fixing America one head at a time! We’re gonna bring one dude out of this crowd onstage with us and and give him a mohawk, a real man’s haircut!” What band can call up a random kid from the audience, give him a mohawk while playing a song, then call up a random girl and have the two make out and dance during the next song? Sounds like ska to me! Less Than Jake‘s stage antics were more than just hilarious, they were outrageous… fitting for such horny music (heh).

“I think Neil just got his first boner!” Immediately after shaving this kids head, the band launched into a mini-set of covers of famous cartoon theme songs, including those from Scooby Doo and Spongebob Squarepants. What can this band not do??

Without a doubt one of the most energetic and entertaining bands on Warped Tour, Bad Rabbits delivered soul-infused rap-funk with a kick. Just watching them groove was compelling enough to make the whole crowd shake their asses to the rhythm, and with 8-song CDs available at their tent for only $1, who could refuse taking the love home with them?

Super-sexy Seattle-based indie rock band Gatsby’s American Dream rocked the stage. Following a string of influences and fronted by the entertaining and eccentric Nic Newsham, their sweeping indie/alt/post/progressive/punk/experimental rock mix caught me off guard as wildly engaging.

To close our day, we got thrashed in the pit by A Day to Remember. We don’t have any salvageable photos from this part of the day except for this one as the lighting was impossible in front of the stage and, well, look at that pit. I dare you to take some good photos from within those depths.

Five Songs From Trevor Hall

23 Jun

Trevor Hall was one of my first posts (now we are above 130 I think), so he hasn’t been heard for a while. Hailing from South Carolina, Trevor is a wonderful songwriter with a lot to say about the world around him. Check out these five songs below, especially if it is a nice sunny day… It makes it that much better! There is a lot of wisdom in his music, and we can expect a new album this summer!

Time For A Bob Marley Break

2 Apr

I believe that Bob Marley was one of the greatest singers, songwriters, artists, musicians, (fill in the blank), of all time. So, I thought that I would post some great videos of Mr. Marley, because it’s not a bad idea to relax and listen to some good reggae from time to time. So here is an awesome live video. Enjoy!

State Radio: Sure To Satisfy and Inspire

30 Mar

When the great band, Dispatch, broke up back in 2002 (but they are going back on tour this summer and releasing an EP to accompany the tour… so Dispatch fans GET EXCITED), many people had questions as to what may come as a result. Chad Urmston, one of the members of Dispatch, came out after the break up with his new project titled State Radio, and in my opinion, it almost makes the Dispatch break up worth it (almost, I said almost). The band has a brilliant mix of socially conscious songs to raise awareness about many of the current issues in our world, and light hearted songs that will help the mind relax and release. State Radio has released four albums to date, and are on tour as we speak (they just played the Showbox, here in Seattle). And, a quick little fun fact about the band: They played a show near the Republican National Convention in 2008 along with Rage Against the Machine in protest… And they founded an activist group called Calling All Crows in hopes to “promote human rights” specifically in Sudan. So, normally I like to leave you all with live videos, but there are two great music videos that I am going to share instead. The first is for “Right Me Up”, and the second for “Camilo”. Although they both have different feels, each tune is catchy, musical, and inspiring.

Who am I kidding? I have to put up at least one live video… Here is “Keepsake”.

Mishka: Island Sound

29 Mar

Bermuda native, Mishka, is an internationally known reggae artist. His sound and voice are genuine and heartfelt, and this becomes obvious as one listens to a live preformance of Mishka’s. To date, the artist has relased 5 albums, the most recent dropping in 2010. I will keep this post short and leave you all with a live video of “Above the Bones”. Lay back, relax, and listen!

Cas Haley: “America’s Got Talent” Seems To Have Found Some Talent

26 Mar

Yesterday, a few of my friends went to the Trevor Hall concert in Fremont, and they told me about Cas Haley. I had never heard of the man, but they said to check it out so I did. What I found was a big, happy looking reggae singer with some pretty good music. I looked up his biography and found that he was runner up for a season of “America’s Got Talent” (talent yes, grammar no). I don’t watch much television really, but it is good to see that someone who isn’t just singing auto-tuned pop hits can make it! Here are some videos:

Take this one (titled “I Wish That I”) to the beach with you:

Luc And The Lovingtons: A Worldly Sound

16 Mar

When thinking of the idea of local friends/musicians, Luc and the Lovingtons came to mind. The band consists of musicians from all over the world, lead by Luc, who has lived in multiple countries himself. The band has a feel-good sound, using their music as a vehicle for love and justice. The big break came for this band when one of their tunes (“Freedom Song”) was put on a compilation CD that came across the ears of Jason Mraz. When Jason heard the tune, he felt inspired to cover the song himself and ask the band to join him on tour. Luc and the Lovingtons have been one of the most successful opening acts for Jason, selling more merch then any other band that has opened for him.

Where do I have the connection to the band? The percussionist/singer in the band, Felipe, was my spanish teacher back in the old middle school days. I remember listening to demos of the band and just talking bands with him, and now he and the band are on tour with Jason Mraz! This band has come a long way and, in my opinon, deserve all the success that they get. This video below is the live version of the song that caught Jason Mraz’s ear, it is called “Freedom Song”, and while trying to make listeners feel good, the band is also calling for unity and justice. So lay back and enjoy!
